#36 People (September 15, 1997)
This cover of People features a black and white photograph of Princess Diana, and the issue is a tribute to her life after she was killed in August 1997 in a car crash. Diana appeared on the cover of the magazine a record 52 times and was one of the most popular People cover subjects. In 1981, she married Prince Charles and arguably became one of the most famous women in the world. She was lauded for her high-profile involvement in AIDS issues and for an international campaign against landmines. Diana's death was greeted with extraordinary public grief, and her funeral at Westminster Abbey drew an estimated three million mourners in London, as well as worldwide television coverage.
Princess Diana to me is one of the greatest women that has lived on this Earth, however many people have a negative thought of her since she passed in that car crash. It's good to see her how she was instead of how she is now. Princess Diana was a true person that could always find the good in others even when they were judging her or her husband. She was involved in AIDS issues and international campaigns against landmines all while raising two young children and a country. This picture is able to tell the audience to grief for her for what happened to her but to praise her and her family for all they have done in the past, present, and future.

1. Have your own style of getting a point across. You can have the same subject as another magazine but you need to present it to the audience in a different fashion.
2. Protect the merchandise. Use plastic covers to keep it from getting dirty.
3. Give hints on the cover for the stories that are inside. Entice the audience.
4. Make the cover appealing so it can stand out when next to another magazines.
5. Have a familiar logo or saying on all magazines for people to recognize the brand.

Lytro Warm-Up
1. The loaded for a little while and then they focused in on the random things.
2. The Lytro camera is able to record light fields and allow everyone to use it. It has a light field sensor that captures the color, intensity, and vector direction of the rays of light.
3. The Lytro camera allows the photographer to be able to focus on whatever, change perspectives and switch between 2D and 3D without anyone really noticing.
4. I don't think it's worth the price but I'm sure many people would thing otherwise and waste their money on it.

Rule of Photography II
Self Portraits II
1. The point is to use your eyes and your imagination, whether you want to use detail and abstraction to say something about an individual or about the beauty of the human body.
2. Think about your motivation and emotions: Blankly staring at the camera rarely gets good results. Be silly, don’t be afraid to over-act. The worst that can happen is that you fill up your memory card with useless photos; but you might also find yourself with a proper gold-nugget of a self portrait.
3. You can create an especially revealing self-portrait by adding personal memorabilia surrounding your mirrored image, such as photos of yourself at various stages of your life, or anything that tells the viewer about your interests. Besides a mirror, a window can sometimes offer a reflective surface for you to capture your own image.
I chose the top picture because the combination of his face and the plates make a very comical picture. It looks as if his head is being served on a plate. I chose the bottom picture because from this point of view it look as if the sea of cranberries go on and on and the man looks tiny compared to it.
I chose the top picture the way the smoke looks is really cool. The smoke not only is able to stand on it's own but in a way it enhances the person in the picture also. I like the second picture because I've always seen these kinds of pictures and wanted to always try it myself. The picture is in a way asking a question. It's asking what's face is the subject really making?

I chose the top picture because those are string instruments and I play a string instrument so I can related to the girls also the picture looks very natural. It looks like they are just hanging out and talking nothing to posed our made up. The second picture is also super natural. It just looks like a couple walking in the tall grass together. They don't even notice the camera, just each other.
I want to shoot a group of friends just having fun. Either they can be talking our doing something I just want to be able to capture that natural feel like in the two pictures directly above this. I think it would be nice to have them outside, just sitting around talking and having a good time. I would want to be able to use the sun so I would want them to have the sun behind them and to make the shot successful I think I would have to be able to get everyone smiling and in the moment. They need pretend I'm not there and just be themselves.

Shortlist Warm-Up
I really like this picture because the sun is at the perfect spot which makes the sky look magical, all the different hues of blue and yellow compliment each other so well. I also really like how the clouds look. It's looks like they were perfectly placed the exact same distance apart from each other.
When I read the text for this picture it made me happy. The teacher is a paraplegic and he's still able to do his job and teach his students. He's able to defy odds and do what he wants.
When I got to these pictures most of them showed girls in random poses with excessive make up and that to me is just unappealing and then I came to this picture. The text was "my lovely boyfriend." It was plan and simple and so is the pictures and that was what made me gravitate towards it.
This picture is of an eighty year old grandmother and her seventeen year old son. The grandmother is suffering from chronic pulmonary disease and they both know her time is coming to an end and the affection between these two is refreshing. It's not everyday you see this kind of love especially coming from a teenage boy.
When I got to this website most of these pictures were of a people just facing the camera and a plan background but this pictures is different. The little girl is out of focus and the bubble seems to be the main subject but it still tells a much better story then people just staring at the camera and smiling.
This is one of the more tough category to pick a picture I like. Documentaries to me are more movies and not so much pictures so I was a little confused. However when this picture came up and I saw what it said I picked it. Those two simple words that when put together go so much deeper then you would expect, it's surprising and refreshing at the same time.
When I got to this category most of the pictures where close up of flowers and I would have to read every single text to actually understand what I was looking at but when I got to this one I knew. It's a tree, simple as that. This tree in a way is the perfect tree. It should be the pictures in the dictionary, right next to the definition of a tree.
I chose this picture first of all because tigers are one of my favorite animals and also because it's so natural. The tiger like any other predator needs to work for its food. In this case the tiger is jumping out of the water to be able to get his next meal.
This picture not only has a really pretty model but the 3D effect on it makes a lasting impression. It was the very first picture on the slide but I came back to it at least three more times before finally deciding on it. It's just fun/confusing to look at.
I chose this pictures because it's so detailed. You can see the snot even coming out of the bull's nose as he fights. You can see the intensity in the bull's eyes also and can almost in a way feel the anger they are feeling.

Extra Credit: Snakes
http://marklaita.com/serpentine.html
The website showed me a picture of a bunch of different colored snakes. They were all positioned in different styles and the pictures were taken from above the snakes.
I learned that you can literally take pictures of anything. Even disgusting animals that most people are scared of.
I picked this picture because I love how the snake is positioned, along with the pattern and colors of the snake it is a very mesmerizing picture.
The photographer used simplicity because it's a simple black background that enhances the picture instead of taking away from it.

Self Portraits
I think a good/powerful picture needs to show something powerful. I chose the top picture has a lot of color which caught my eye and then the motion of it kept my attention. When I first saw the second picture I didn't notice the numbers. I just the last two hands holding each other and I thought it seemed very powerful and then I saw the numbers, which just made the picture even more powerful.
If I were in charge of taking the picture I would want to do it somewhere outside. I've always seen those girls in pretty dresses in the middle of the woods and I've always wanted to try that. Nature is a really beautiful thing and I think with a camera I could really capture that beauty along with the beauty of the person.

Dove Revolution
1. Her neck was made longer and thinner. Here eyes were moved up. Her hair became bigger. Her lips were made bigger. Her skin color was lightened.
2. No, it's a person's appearance. It's how they were made. Who are we to change that?
3. If you were to change a person's body to make them look skinny especially when it comes to women is unethical.
4. The types of changes I think are okay is if their eyes are red or having effects like sepia and so on and so on.
5. Fashion photography usually look for beauty but photojournalism is about beauty and the ugly.
6. Both I think are wrong. Like I said before, it's not okay to alter a person's appearance. Whether it's making their neck longer and giving them teeth. Unfortunately fashion and models have some how been able to defy this thought and create unrecongizable human beings.

Digital Manipulation
A. I learned that photo shop isn't something to be used a lot because it could take away from your picture and possibly cost you your job and credit.
B. I think this type of photo editing is because it at times is used to hid the truth. Instead of allowing the picture to show what really happened photographers are able to alter it however way they want to.
A. I think this photo is unethical because they altered a person's physical appearance. Which I find horrible and demeaning. They took something as small as teeth and made it into a huge deal. If I were the editor I would both be embarrassed and apologetic.
B. I don't find this picture as bad because I believe in my heart that OJ Simpson did kill his wife so he is a a killer and he is an American Tragedy.

National Geographic
2. This is my favorite pictures because it shows nature as its greatest. The two Beluga whales are simply messing around have having fun and I think that is beautiful. Now a days people are too busy to enjoy the little things in life like splashing water and I think this pictures is a reminder.
3. I really like the pictures they had consisting of people and animals. If I had a choice I would go walk around downtown or go the the dog pool at Zilker Park.

Amusement Parks
1. I would want to visit Nara Dreamland in Nara, Japan. I've been to Japan before and I think it would be fun to go back, especially to an amusement park and take pictures. This amusment park stood out to me because of the mountin. It reminds me of the Magic Mountain ride in Florida at Disney World. I had a lot of fun there and I figure I would have even more fun in Japan.

5. What I like about water is that is very freeing. You're able to bend and pose whichever way you want without looking stupid. My favorite part about water is it's flowiness. I like how these models hairs looks messy but at the same time perfect. If I were a photographer assigned to an underwater shoot I would want flowy dresses and girls with long hair just so whe water can really take control and mold the model.
6. Well I would of course need a camera and a model. Finding a pool I don't think would be hard though. I would have to take into consideration merging, rule of thirds, and balance.

American Soldier
Photos:
A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?
September 1, 2008. The picture of Ian and his two friends saying good-bye really stands out to me. It shoes that these tough guys that went through difficult are still these soft guys that care for each other.
B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?
The Basic Training photo are very intense and powerful. These young men sign up to be yelled at and pushed to their limits.

A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
Past tense.
B. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
They help the person viewing the photograph to better understand what is happening.

The picture of him in the care with some girl: Ian holds hands while laying his head on his girlfriend's shoulder. It's easy to say they are happy to see each other.
Ian is playing with a dog: Ian comes home to greet his dog. They both look excited to see each other after a long time apart.
Ian with his family at the airport: Ian looks excited to be home and both is parents look relieved. He is surrounded by his family and friends as they leave the airport.

C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
I feel like photos are better at showing emotion and moment. They are able to capture that exact moment and everything that comes with it.
Example: Those pictures of Ian's friends and mother crying were really powerful to me. I'm able to really see their pain and how much they are going to miss Ian.

Cool Videos
I felt like the video was really able to show the school spirit(even if it's just a little) that we have, however I would like if there were pictures of the students in the audience. Not everyone is in football, band, cheerleaders, or dancers. I think there were maybe three pictures of actual students outside of these organizations. The maker of this video should include actual students.

Warm-Up
1. What do you have to do on the camera to make this type of photo?
You have to capture multiple standard photographs and then merge them into a HDR image.
2. Look up a Canon T3 on google and tell me if it has the ability to shoot bracketed photos?
Yes
3. Is there a place on campus we could take a series of photos like this? Courtyard
4. Do a google image search for HDR photos and find your favorite, post it on your blog, tell me why you picked that photo and then tell me what techniques (rules of photography) the photographer used.
I like this picture because it shoes the Eifel Tower and because the clouds in the background look amazing. The technique that I thought of was simplicity. There's nothing reallying taking away from the tower, the grass, flowers, and clouds sort of bring out the tower.

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school? I know this may sound weird but we could take pictures of shoes. Everyone has them and they are all different, it could make the moral very colorful and different.
2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones? Phones only. Most people with cameras I feel like stage the shot or plan out find something and I believe this should be a spur of a moment picture. You should just be able to stumble upon this sight and take a real quick picture to capture it.
3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus? Everywhere and anywhere. In the cafeteria, by the gym, by the portables, by entraces. Just anywhere where people can see it.

Great Black and White Photographters, Part 3!
1. What caught my eye was the fact that the photographer shot in New York City and shot buildings in New York. I went to New York last year and feel in loved with the atmosphere.
2. I see.....tall building surrounding me. They are towering over me and I feel overwhelmed but at the same time excited.
I smell......hot dogs, peanuts, pretzels, and whatever else the street vendors are selling. I also smell trash and a mixture of colgne and perfume.
I hear........the moving of pedestrians feet and the honks of cars and taxi as they make their way to their destinations. Bits and pieces of conversations as they rush by me.
I taste.......nothing but my dry mouth because I'm tired of my walk.
I feel........the freezing cold air as I'm walking through the streets. I feel people running into me as I try to maneuver through the city on the crowded sidewalks. I feel the ache of my legs as they are about to give out from all the walking and cold weather.
3.I'm not exactly sure what I want to take pictures of yet. I like to take pictures of people (especially my friends) and flowers. I think pictures are the best way to keep a memory alive. I would want to take pictures of get togethers. Where ever their are people hanging out, there should be a camera to catch every minute of it.

1. I learned that it's not as confusing as I thought it was.
2. They go from extremely light to pretty dark.
3. Each ISO had different settings for it too look bright, dark, or perfect.
4. That I then need to look over the settings before taking the actual picture.
5. The brighter pictures were blurry but as the shutter speed changed it became more in focus.

Slim Cam
F/2.8 looks best 1/125 seconds.
F/4 looks best at 1/125 seconds.
F/5.6 looks best at 1/60 seconds.
F/8 looks best at 1/60 seconds.
F/11 looks best at 1/60 seconds.
F/16 looks best at 1/30 seconds.
F/18 looks best at 1/15 seconds.
On slower shutter speed the lighter and blurry the picture is. The photographer could put the camera on a tripod. 1/4 seconds is the lowest shutter speed. 1/30 of a seconds is the lowest speed a photographer an hand hold a camera.

ISO
1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? It's better to have a higher ISO at a football game and basketball is because it's better form shooting with limited light and fast action pictures.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO? When there is plenty of light use the lowest ISO to retain the most detail and have the highest image quality.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO? When there is limited light and you are taking ultra-fast pictures.
4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?
Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600.

Shutter Speed
1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which will be next month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:
At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth 1/4000
b.) the food eating contest 1/100
c.) the rock climbing wall 1/200
d.) someone working at a booth 1/160
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle 1/1600
f.) the Diamonds performance 1/1250
Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
a.) the dunking booth 1/1000
b.) the food eating contest 1/50
c.) the rock climbing wall 1/100
d.) someone working at a booth 1/60
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle 1/800
f.) the Diamonds performance 1/500
2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.
Auto mode- the camera selects the shutter speed and aperture
Aperture Priority - you choose the aperture while the shutter speed is chosen by the camera
Manual Mode - both aperture and shutter speed are selected by you
3. With the camera near you, what are the shutter speeds available to you on that camera? You will have to turn the camera on to determine this - hopefully you can figure out what setting to put the camera on to determine the answer to this question.

Aperture
1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? A camera is like the human eye and the aperture is the pupil of the eye.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the aperture the larger the f-stop number, the larger the opening the smaller the number.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? Larger apertures can help bring the background up better while smaller apertures blur the background and just focus on the object in the very front. "The larger the aperture, the smaller the smaller the area in focus."
4. With the camera near you - tell me the F stops available on the lens currently attached.
F3.5, F4,F4.5, F5, F5.6,F6.3,F7.1, F8,F9,F10,F11,F13,F14,F16,F18,F20,F22

African Black and White
My favorite picture is the picture of the lion and lioness rubbing heads. It shows that even though they are these scarey wild animals they can still show affection in their own ways.
What kinds of camera did he use? A Pentax 67II with only two fixed lenses.
What is his reason for taking the photos? He wants to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa.
What is his hope by takings these types of photos? To open the eyes of humans that threaten both the animals and nature.
Quote about Africa: "The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes."
Academic Shoot Reflection
1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
Nobody was acting natural. They would just stare at me until I left the room.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I focused mostly on focusing the camera and getting the everything in the frame that I wanted.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would have taken more time to get a really good shot instead of finding things that kinda sort of followed the rules.
4. What things would you do the same?
I would go to the same classrooms and have my same partner (maybe).
5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
My favorite rule is the framing but I have to say the easiest is balance.
6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
The hardest one to find is framing.
7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
Rule of Thirds is still a little confusing to me and I can figure it out better with time and more picture taking.

Mergers
How well did you follow the rule? I think I followed this rule the best!
What is the subject (be very very specific)? A student in class reading.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?

Lines
How well did you follow the rule? I don't think I followed the rule that well.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? Students have study hall in Mr. Voge's physics classroom.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? I could have found a different picture all together to represent lines.
